Gaye Straza a passé sa jeunesse en vacances sous les tropiques. Après des années à éviter les parfums traditionnels parce qu'ils n'étaient pas en accord avec elle, Gaye Straza a décidé de se créer un parfum qui incarnait les fleurs blanches exotiques qu'elle aimait. Pendant plusieurs mois, elle a travaillé sans relâche avec une petite maison de parfumerie pour développer ce que nous appelons aujourd'hui le parfum kai. La première fois que Straza portait du kai, elle a été arrêtée par un éditeur de beauté sur Madison Avenue à New York, lui demandant où elle pouvait acheter le parfum. C'était une préfiguration des événements à venir. Straza a ensuite rendu le parfum disponible dans sa propre boutique de mode haut de gamme à Malibu. kai a pris sa propre vie. Il y avait tellement de demande pour le parfum que Straza a vendu sa boutique en 1999 pour développer la ligne, lançant kai comme sa propre entreprise.
